《A Paródia》 (1900–1907)

1

This publication was a benchmark for Portuguese satirical magazines in the early 20th century. Its founder, Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro, is hailed as the greatest Portuguese cartoonist of the 19th century. Known for his incisive style and exaggerated forms, he excelled at using personification and satire to critique current affairs and society. Following his death, his son, Manuel Gustavo, continued the publication’s visual style.

In the history of graphic design, its contributions are primarily reflected in:

· Establishing a distinct visual language for Portuguese satirical cartoons: combining mainstream European lithography techniques with a uniquely Portuguese sense of humour, the covers frequently featured single, highly impactful satirical cartoons; this approach of treating the ‘cover as a poster’ was ahead of its time.
· A pioneer in magazine branding: defining the publication’s soul through a consistent visual tone and a core team of illustrators (the founder’s family), which constituted a highly avant-garde operational and design strategy in the magazine design of the time.
· The integration of typography and layout: the hand-drawn style of the title type blended seamlessly with the cartoon lines, demonstrating how text could participate in the overall narrative as an integral part of the imagery.
